There have been many updates at the mini mansion that fall into the category above. In this year I decided that it was time to fix a few things and really make our home one that suited our family of 7. Our home has grown leaps and bounds from when we built it in 2009. One major change that I had to get the family on board with was my design idea to update the cabinets. It has been 7 years in the making, lots of conversations, visual examples, begging, reminding who the interior designer was and wondering if it would EVER happen!

People this is proof that I got my way... just kidding!

Before we dive into the details I want you to remember what the kitchen cabinets looked like before. Please take time to do this first, so that you can understand and visualize how big of an impact simple changes can make. You don't have to spend tons of money to make your home visually appealing.

Last April, I installed our glass back splash for a quick update. I lived with it for a while before making any other changes to see how I liked it. I loved how that small change in texture made the space more inviting, yet I knew it was missing something.

After doing some searching I narrowed down my color choice to two beautiful whites from Sherwin Williams. At first glance they may look the same, but to the trained eye they don't. They have slight differences in tone depending the location used & time of day. Always test to ensure your paint looks good at all times of day, regardless of the type of lighting.

Initially I had planned on going with another company, but decided against it after seeing how long the other products took to cure. I was very familiar with Sherwin Williams products, since I used them in the past. It didn't hurt that they also had a line specifically for painting cabinets.

I ended up choosing Pure White in a satin finish, due to the fact that these cabinets were in my kitchen. I wanted to ensure that I could wipe them down and sanitize them. Armed with two gallons of paint & primer we began. First up was removing all the cabinet doors. I collected all the hardware into a ziploc bag, so we wouldn't loose anything.

Each cabinet door and frame to include our huge island was cleaned and sanded. This step is the most important of all, because without clean cabinets your paint won't adhere properly. You will clean, sand and clean again to remove any dust particles that may be present. We put two coats of primer on the doors and frames being sure to allow the required drying time between applications. Our doors were sprayed by my painter, while the frames were rolled using a foam roller. You could also opt to spray your frames; but we decided against it ,since I didn't want to do all the prep required.

Here are a few views of it completed. I absolutely love the way my cabinets look now and to be honest it truly makes the heart of our home feel three times bigger. Before painting the cabinets I loved the space, but it felt dark.

I must say that I love the change & couldn't be more happier with the result. I saved over $5000.00 going this route! I will say when in doubt hire a professional to complete the job. Many people say that white cabinets are hard to keep clean, I say dark cabinets hide dirt & grime. White cabinets expose the filth, so you can deal with it.
